How do you start your energy career?

Entry level positions are offered through our vocational career pathway (trade apprenticeships, cadetships and trainee positions) and our academic pathway (graduate program). Below are some examples of possible subject selections and possible career pathways.

Trade career pathways

Trade positions are generally advertised annually, dependent on vacancies and can be based in various locations around Tasmania. It is an advantage to have strong English and Maths results, be focused on achieving your TCE and demonstrate your interest of a trade through evidence of related work placement experiences and hobbies. This could be in the form of photographs or video.

Traineeship career pathways

Our main business administration centre is based in Hobart. It is here we offer administrative traineeships that can lead to a range of career opportunities in finance, travel and fleet services, business support services, procurement and contracts.

Cadet pathways

Every two years we offer a cadet hydrographer position, offering on-the-job training. This position is responsible for collecting key data of rainfall and water levels of our reservoirs and involves travelling to some truly remote locations. An ability to accurately record data and a solid interest in environmental science would be a perfect fit for this position.

Academic career pathways

An academic career pathway begins after graduating from university. Each year Hydro Tasmania recruits approximately 15-20 graduates. We accept applications each year in February/March. Students apply in their final year of study. Our graduate program is the entry point for university students who have completed a degree in one of the following disciplines:
