Hydro Tasmania hosts Cybersecurity Fun Day

13 July 2024

How’s your cyber kung fu? In martial arts the goal is to defend yourself and avoid harming others. But did you know there are equivalent techniques and concepts in the realm of cybersecurity?

Tasmanian families today (Saturday) levelled-up their cybersecurity defences at award-winning* Kids SecuriDay educational workshops delivered in partnership with Hydro Tasmania.

Hydro Tasmania’s Operational Technology Cybersecurity Lead Chris Brooks said it was important for children and teenagers to be educated early about how to stay safe online.

“In this day and age, we’re immersed in the digital world. That brings a lot of benefits, but also inherent risks,” Mr Brooks said.

“Kids SecuriDay is a fantastic way for families to learn about cybersecurity and develop the tools they need to protect themselves online.”

Kids SecuriDay Founder Heidi Winter said cybersecurity is a critical skill and learning it didn’t need to be boring.

“Our mission is to empower youth and their families with the knowledge and tools to navigate the digital landscape safely,” Ms Winter said.

“We make learning about security fun and accessible so everyone can level-up their cyber defences.”

Family games and workshops were run by industry cybersecurity professionals on the day.

In the Cyber Kung Fu 101 workshop, participants applied the concept of defensive moves to the digital world, learning how to fend off threats online.

Other workshops included:

  • Cybergames
  • Physical Security
