A volunteer-run junior sports organisation is now providing the joys of participation to a more diverse range of members, thanks to a Community Grant from Hydro Tasmania.
Little Athletics Tasmania used its 2022 Community Grant to purchase equipment for children with a disability that allows them to have a more fulfilling relationship with sport.
Hydro Tasmania has launched its Community Grants program for 2023, with Tasmanian not-for-profit organisations being encouraged to apply for funding.
Now in its seventh year, the Community Grants program has a proud history of helping fund projects that make a real difference for people and communities, and this year is offering grants of up to $5000 to community organisations across the state.
Hydro Tasmania Executive GM People Culture and Engagement, Ruth Groom, said funding applications did not necessarily have to be project or equipment-based, and could instead relate to helping cover administration or running costs.
“These community groups are doing great work, often with very small budgets and a volunteer workforce. A grant can make all the difference in what they can achieve,” Ms Groom said.
“It is so rewarding to hear the stories of what the Hydro Tasmania funding has enabled these groups to accomplish. We’re seeing communities that are more connected and empowered and groups able to expand the services they offer their clients.”
Little Athletics Tasmania is a volunteer-run organisation with a passion to provide a fun, healthy, and participation-based sport for children of all abilities, its President Paul Mommers said.
“We have a strong desire to provide sporting opportunities for children with a disability, so we researched equipment that would make participation in athletics easier,” Mr Mommers said.
“We settled on buying a racing wheelchair, a frame runner, and a seated throw chair for each of our three Tasmanian regions. This equipment isn't cheap, and when we looked around for help, we found the Hydro Tasmania Community Grants program.
“Applying for the grant was simple with the staff at Hydro Tasmania very helpful. We were successful with the grant funding which greatly assisted us in being able to buy the equipment.
“We are excited to be able to promote the use of these items to the community in the lead-up to our next athletics season.”
Applications for the 2023 Community Grants program will close on Friday 31 March.
