A walk with a mentor can hydropower your career

2 June 2021

It’s a simple idea that can change a career: a one hour walk and talk with a mentor in your field, which is why Hydro Tasmania is sponsoring Mentor Walks to give Tasmanian women access to CEOs, executives and other female professionals for career advice and wisdom.

Mentor Walks is a national not-for-profit initiative for women that provides opportunities to learn, workshop and benefit from the experience of other successful females through a program of scheduled walks booked with mentors.

After more than five years, Mentor Walks has over 300 mentors throughout Australia and with sponsorship from Hydro Tasmania is now able to bring this program to Tasmania for the first time.

Co-founder of Mentor Walks, Bobbi Mahlab said their goal was to develop the next generation of successful women.

“Career women have issues big and small and it’s often hard to find impartial people to go to for advice, so Mentor Walks gives women access to experienced people who can help them workshop issues and move forward,” Ms Mahlab said.

“The demand for a program like this has only increased, with Mentor Walks continuing even during the COVID-19 lockdowns with a series of ‘virtual walks’, and we know there is huge demand in Tasmania from the many enquiries we receive.”

"We've been wanting to bring the Mentor Walks program to the women of Tasmania since we started and we're ecstatic that Hydro Tasmania has helped to make this a reality.”

Hydro Tasmania’s Executive General Manager Commercial, Caroline Wykamp said she was proud to be a mentor with Mentor Walks.

“I’m looking forward to meeting our mentees and learning about the challenges they’re facing, whether it’s about asking for a pay rise, influencing executive teams, managing up, getting buy-in from investors, or just the smaller day-to-day challenges,” she said.

“This program is open to all Tasmanian women who think they might benefit and we’ll also ensure that our own female employees have access to mentors of their choosing, because we want to give our own people a chance to learn and develop.”
