The impacts of the coronavirus hit hardest where people are most vulnerable, which is why Hydro Tasmania is increasing its support for Colony 47 with an additional $20,000 for a range of community programs.

Colony 47 and Hydro Tasmania have had a community partnership since 2011, focussed on the education, health and wellbeing programs for young women at the Mara House supported accommodation, but that support is being expanded during this time of need.

On Monday 1 June, Hydro Tasmania CEO Steve Davy joined Colony 47 CEO Danny Sutton to promote their Parents and Kids Together (PAKT) program.

“Education is the key to Tasmania’s future prosperity and we’ve been looking for opportunities to ensure the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic doesn’t lead to long-term consequences for current students, or for Tasmania,” Mr Davy said.

“The PAKT program engages parents with primary school-aged children together in a creative art project, which would normally be done at school but can now be provided safely at home through remote support and the provision of these learning kits.

“At its heart, PAKT is about encouraging families to spend time together, which is so important because a supportive family can set a child on the right path for their entire life.”

Hydro Tasmania’s additional funding will also support other Colony 47 initiatives.

• The Eureka Clubhouse usually operates as a day centre for people living with mental ill-health, by providing meals and social support. The clubhouse has been transformed into innovative outreach model, where meals are delivered to people’s homes and support is provided remotely.
• Housing Connect Starter Packs provide basic supplies for people finding housing for the first time, moving into their first rental property without the basics that make a home, like linen, appliances or cleaning equipment.

“Hydro Tasmania is proud to continue supporting Colony 47 because we know the work they do makes a difference,” Mr Davy said.

Additional support is also being provided through Hydro Tasmania’s recently announced COVID-19 Community Grants of up to $10,000 for community organisations, with applications closing on 5 June 2020.
