Hydro Tasmania’s proactive approach to workplace mental health has been recognised at the 2019 National Suicide Prevention Australia Conference, with the business taking out the Workplace Life Award for its industry-leading A New Mindset program.

Now in its fourth year, A New Mindset was developed and implemented in collaboration with OzHelp Tasmania and includes training, information and support.

Hydro Tasmania CEO Steve Davy said while the organisation has always had a healthy workplace / workforce program, the focus has generally been on physical health.

“Workplace surveys and other feedback identified mental health as an increasing concern across the organisation, particularly in relation to stress, anxiety and depression,” Mr Davy said.

“In response, Hydro Tasmania expanded its existing healthy workplace program to increase the focus on mental health and wellbeing, reduce stigma, encourage early intervention and support and increase suicide awareness.

“To ensure that no employees were left behind, the program was rolled out across the whole of business, including remote site areas,” he said.

In 2017 – 18, Hydro Tasmania undertook the OzHelp Tasmania suicide awareness training, Looking After Your Mates, with more than 70 per cent of the workforce completing the training.

In addition, all Hydro Tasmania managers are trained in identifying and managing mental health and wellbeing to create a safe and healthy environment for employees to seek assistance and receive appropriate support.

A New Mindset has resulted in a significant increase in suicide awareness and the number of people seeking help, as well as increased knowledge of mental health and wellbeing, including practical tools.

Hydro Tasmania has committed to continuing the program to provide ongoing mental health support to its staff.
