Hydro turns it on for Launceston this weekend

14 September 2018

The sheer power of water will be on display this weekend in Launceston at two major Hydro Tasmania events.

Hundreds of people have snapped up free tickets to experience the power of water firsthand during our guided tours of Trevallyn Power Station on Saturday September 15.

Hydro Tasmania CEO Steve Davy said it was an exciting weekend for Australia’s largest generator of renewable energy.

“Our people take a lot of pride in what they do and enjoy giving others the chance to look ‘under the hood’ and see how we use the water from the South Esk River to generate electricity,” Mr Davy said.

“Tasmanians are Hydro Tasmania’s most important customers, and the very people we were created to serve. Our people thrive on having a strong connection with the community, and the power station open days have become a crucial part of that,” he said.

Mackintosh and Gordon power stations will host open days later in the year. Details are available on our website www.hydro.com.au.

Rounding out a huge water-powered weekend in Launceston, thrill-seeking paddlers will take advantage of ample white water in Cataract Gorge on Sunday September 16.

The special water release coincides with the second day of the Esk Paddle Fest, culminating in the Hydro Tasmania Cataract Gorge Extreme Race.

“Harnessing the power of water is something we’ve been doing for more than 100 years. While providing clean, secure energy is our first priority, we also take pride in supporting the recreational activities that Tasmanians enjoy,” Mr Davy said.

“We’ll be releasing up to 30 cubic metres of water per second through the day - that’s the equivalent of an Olympic swimming pool every minute and a half, providing great conditions for paddlers.”

The water release will happen from 9:00am to 3:00pm on Sunday September 16, and the Extreme Race will run from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

Ends.
