Hydro Tasmania wishes to clarify some comments reported about the Tamar Valley Power Station.

In discussions about the station and its major turbine, the Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT), at yesterday’s Public Accounts Committee hearing, the Chairman of Hydro Tasmania Grant Every-Burns indicated it was not required for energy security.

That discussion was in the context of this coming summer, given the healthy position of Hydro Tasmania’s storages, which are currently above 46 per cent. The Chairman’s comments only related to the current situation with respect to storage levels, not ongoing requirements.

In some instances, the comments have been misinterpreted as suggesting that Hydro Tasmania does not regard the CCGT as an ongoing component of Tasmania’s energy security per se, into the future. This is not correct.

The Tasmanian Government’s position is that the TVPS should be retained. The Tamar Valley Power Station remains available for use either for energy security or commercial operations.

Hydro Tasmania is assisting the Energy Security Taskforce in its deliberations regarding Tasmania’s future energy mix. We await its recommendations.
