Angling is very popular in Tasmania, with about 25,000 people licenced to fish our inland waters in 2016/17.

As you don the waders, brave the early morning twilight and embark on the ultimate game of skill and patience, you naturally want some certainty and predictability about lake levels and the quality of fishing on offer.

We manage many of the world-class fishing lakes that you love to fish on. But we do need to balance good fishing conditions with Tasmania’s hydropower needs, meaning the water levels can vary, along with the fishing conditions. In an ideal world, passionate anglers would prefer those lake levels to be not just consistent, but consistently good for fishing. We get that. And we do want to help.

One of the things we can do is try to give you the best possible information to support your decisions about when and where to fish.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with the Inland Fisheries Service (IFS) to identify ways we can manage water levels to support good fishing, and we’ve also put important fishing information at your fingertips on our website.

As part of our commitment to supporting high-quality recreational angling, we’ve just signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the IFS.

It specifies minimum target water levels for popular lakes and lagoons managed by Hydro Tasmania – namely Bronte Lagoon, Laughing Jack Lagoon, Penstock Lagoon, Arthurs Lake, Woods Lake, Little Pine Lagoon, Shannon Lagoon and Lake Augusta.

The MOU will also help protect native fish stocks and water quality.

We also support recreational fishing by helping fund boat ramps at our most popular sites, and providing up to date lake level and flows information on our website.
