The best thing about the job is the flexibility and the people. People are the most important piece. I've made some good friendships. Instead of working in an office you're outdoors with some pretty cool toys. There's always somewhere to move up through the ranks and progress with Hydro Tasmania too. You could be a trainee one year and an apprentice the next. If you get in and have a go and you fail, what's the worst that can happen?
As an accountant, you can often find yourself stuck in roles that are monotonous and repetitive. In the 12 months I've been with Hydro Tas, I’ve already been able to contribute to some exciting projects and advise on multi-million dollar budgets. The flexibility provided by the business is great, allowing me to pursue further study and work from home as I need.
What attracted me to Hydro Tasmania was the ability to build a career, not just a job. The underpinning nature of Hydro is that we look after our people and we have a very safety-minded outlook on how we go about things and also building our people, building knowledge through training and mentoring and then also from that, building careers. Hydro puts a lot of effort into helping people to progress their career. Whether it's training, mentoring with senior people, or working in a different role for a while to progress skills in that area.
Relocating from interstate, I was curious as to what was in store at Hydro Tasmania. Starting as a graduate means starting alongside a group of ambitious people in the same boat as you, and the welcoming nature of the business made it easy for me to get settled. Renewable energy is fast-paced and challenging, but it’s a great feeling to play a role in Australia’s transition to clean energy. I would recommend Hydro to anyone looking for an exciting career.
Even though I was in the graduate program, it was no different to being a regular employee. I had the opportunity to use my maternity leave and when I came back I was fully supported in working flexibly. I've been very lucky that our business is so supportive of hiring women into STEM fields, because not every business is as committed to diversity and inclusion.
A respected engineer from Hydro Tasmania was holding a course at the university. We had a conversation, and he encouraged me to apply as a graduate that year. I've been with Hydro Tasmania now for 20 years. To me, it is all about the people. The people are innovators and everybody wants to see it come together. It's the sense of achievement in being part of a team that can undertake this work. I could never do this on my own. That's what keeps me going.
