Sale/lease and demolition of the Bell Bay Power Station site
Hydro Tasmania is repurposing the site of the decommissioned Bell Bay Power Station on the East Tamar Highway, Bell Bay, Tasmania. Bell Bay Power Station was an oil-fired thermal power station built between 1971 and 1974. It was converted from oil to gas in 2003, and decommissioned in 2009. The adjacent and more efficient Tamar Valley Power Station now fills its role. Earlier this year, Hydro Tasmania issued tenders for demolition of the station, and for the sale/lease of the land. This demolition and rehabilitation work will enable sustainable reuse of the site for other purposes, presenting new economic opportunities. Submissions for both tender processes have closed.
On 4 June 2023, it was announced that Hydro Tasmania had reached an in-principle agreement to sell the site to Abel Energy. You can find out more about the proposed future use here. We expect to be able to advise on the outcome of the demolition tender and next steps shortly. For any questions, please get in touch at engagement@hydro.com.au.
